Kai now runs errands for you

K.ai 1.12 is here. Kai can now do work for you, not only answer you.

Give Kai an errand in words. Kai does the errand from start to end. Kai searches the web. Kai reads pages. Kai reads your calendar and your notes. Kai asks you one question when it is stuck. Kai writes a result. You see each step as it runs. You see what each step costs.

We call this an errand. Errands have their own tab, Tasks, next to Chats and Memory.

Abilities

  • Search the web and read pages.
  • Read your calendar. Add an event.
  • Read and add reminders (iPhone only).
  • Read your notes in Memory. Write a note.
  • Read and write the clipboard.
  • Keep files in a workspace for the errand.
  • Ask you one question, then wait for your answer.

Try these

  • “Find three dentists near me taking new patients and compare them.”
  • “Put this week’s meetings in a note.”
  • “Read the page on my clipboard and give me the five key points.”
  • “What on my calendar next week clashes with a trip Tuesday to Thursday?”
  • “There is an invitation on my clipboard. Put it on my calendar.”

The app shows more examples when your Tasks list is empty. The website shows all of them: all errands. From today, this blog shows one errand a day, with a short clip and the steps.

Some examples come from the AwesomeMinis collection. The collection is public domain. We thank the people who wrote them.

You decide

Kai never changes your phone without your permission. When Kai wants to add an event, write a note or use the clipboard, Kai shows you a card first. The card shows what will change. Tap Allow or Skip.

You set a credit limit for each errand: $0.25, $1 or $5. Kai stops at the limit. The errand’s screen shows the money Kai spends, live. The Spend screen shows the total.

You can stop an errand at any time.

Your data

Each step of an errand runs on K.ai’s server. When a step reads something, like a note, a page or your calendar, the later steps of that errand get it too. The server keeps a step’s reply only briefly, so it can send a lost reply again without a second charge. It never keeps a reply longer than a day, and it never writes one to disk. The errand’s history stays on your phone. The errand’s screen shows you what each step sent.

The rules stay the same. Your key carries your credits, never your words. Kai never names a model. We never name a provider.

Errands continue

On Android, an errand keeps running when the screen is off. On the iPhone, an errand pauses when iOS stops the app. The errand continues when you come back. Kai tells you when it paused.

Coming next

We work on the next part now. We ship each piece after we review it and test it.

  • Skills. A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. It tells Kai how to do a kind of errand well. Skills live in your Memory folder. Link that folder on your Mac and your phone, and your skills go to both. Other agents use the same format, so skills from the community work in Kai.
  • Errands on the Mac. The Mac gets the Tasks tab.
  • A clearer look. An icon for each errand. Steps with their time. Sections for today, yesterday and this week.
  • What Kai may do. A settings page with one row per source: Always, Ask each time, or Never.
  • More sources. Location, maps, photos and contacts, each with its own permission.
  • iCloud sync. Your chats, errands and notes on all your Apple devices, in your own iCloud. Never on our server. Off until you turn it on.

Get it

  • Android: get version 1.12.0 from Zapstore.
  • iPhone: get version 1.12.0 from the App Store when Apple approves it.
  • Mac: the Tasks tab comes with Mac 1.7.
